How to get from Sofia Airport to the city center and back

Sofia Airport (Letische Sofia) is located 10 km from the city center. The beautiful air harbor of Bulgaria’s capital can be viewed from the outside from special platforms a few minutes walk away, where you can relax in the fresh air while waiting for your flight.

Subway between Sofia and the airport

A 5-minute walk from Terminal 2, SofiaAirport metro station opened in 2015. It is the fastest, most convenient and cheapest way to get to the city.

The metro station is located under a glass dome. The carriages are new and modern, air-conditioned in summer, and there is always enough space for luggage.

There is a free shuttle service between Terminals 1 and 2 every 15 minutes: a yellow bus. Its stop is located next to the exit.

In 18 minutes the metro reaches the center of Sofia — Serdika station on Maria Luisa Boulevard, close to the Banya Bashi Mosque and Vitoga Boulevard. the advantage of the final station near the airport: you can always get on, even during rush hour. In the opposite direction, you can take the train to the airport at any station along the M2 line.

What you need to know about the Sofia metro:

  • Mode of operation: from 5:30 to 00:00.
  • The fare is 1.60 leva (about 0.80 €), official website with prices: https://www.metrosofia.com//bg/tickets.
  • With a single ticket, you must enter the subway within 30 minutes of purchasing it. Later, the ticket becomes invalid, but you can transfer inside the subway to another line.
  • Tickets can be purchased at special terminals or at the box office, cards are accepted.
  • Large-sized luggage can be carried on the subway.
  • The journey between the airport and the train station is 18 minutes.

Bus from the airport to the center of Sofia

Three city bus routes connect the city center (Guerenal Gurko Street) with the airport terminal 1 and 2: Nos. 84, 184 and 384.

  1. Routes 84 and 184 pass through «Christopher Columbus» Boulevard — «Tsarigradsko Shose» Boulevard — «General Gurko» Street. Travel time is 35 — 45 minutes, depending on traffic congestion.
  2. Route 384 passes through Friendship 2 to Christopher Columbus Boulevard, through Friendship 1 to Terminal 2.

Payment for public transport is made at «Urban Mobility Center» points. Such points are available at bus stops, in the area of Terminal 2 in the «Print» kiosks and bus ticket vending machines in the arrival area of Terminal 1. You can pay for tickets in Bulgarian coins and leva at the machine.

Cab and transfer from Sofia airport

The cab stands at Sofia Airport are located at the exit of Terminal 2 and Terminal 1. They are easily recognizable: they are painted in the traditional yellow color with checkers. The cab operator at Sofia Airport is OK Supertrans. When boarding, you should pay attention to the meter, as local cab drivers do not like to turn them on, and upon arrival they may quote any fare.

  • The price for 1 km is about 0.8 lev, for 1 minute of waiting — 0.2 lev. There is a higher fare at night (from 23:00 to 6:00).
  • You can book a cab in advance on the official website of the company

If necessary, you can book a transfer at the hotel in advance. You will be met at the airport exit area and escorted directly to your car.
